Zen & The Art of Motorcycle Maintenance - a classic book that was widely read but dare I say it widely misunderstood. When I read it in my twenties I so desperately wanted to understand it that I fooled myself into believing I actually did. Zen was cool. Bikes were cool. The author had a weird name and that was cool too. Understanding the book was secondary to having it in your hands or talking about it.
The central theme is the search for Quality. What is it? And how do you know when you find it? What I missed in my youth was that this Quality is the same as the Being or Awareness, or if you're spiritually inclined, Spirit that I refer to. Knowing this opened up so much more meaning and insight and this was mainly due to bumping into BBC Radio 4's excellent dramatisation.
